Arsenal FC have joined the race to sign Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, who is also a transfer target of Manchester United.

Mats Hummels’ future has come under a lot of speculation this summer with both Manchester United and Barcelona being linked with signing the Borussia Dortmund defender. Now Arsenal have joined the race to sign the German international, despite Jurgen Klopp’s insistence on retaining the center back.

Hummels joined Borussia Dortmund in 2009 after coming through the ranks at Bayern Munich, his childhood club. The German center-back has since then went on to establish himself as one of the best young defenders in the World. The 25-year-old has already made 36 appearances for the national team and produced some wonderful performances in Brazil recently as Germany went on to lift the World Cup.

Throughout his career, Mats Hummels has attracted interest from a host of European clubs, but Dortmund have been unwilling to part ways with their prized asset. Both Barcelona and Manchester United have been linked with a move for the defender this summer, but the Catalan club seemed to have pulled out of the race after signing Jeremy Mathieu from Valencia, and are now reportedly keen on signing Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen.

Manchester United though are hot on the heels of Hummels with Louis van Gaal desperate to bring in defensive reinforcements before the start of new season. Van Gaal is looking to play a 3-5-2 formation and will look to sign two new center backs this summer. They have also been linked with Vermaelen, but Arenal are reportedly keen to sell him abroad rather than strengthening their rivals.

The latest reports suggest that the Gunners have also joined the race to sign Mats Hummels. Arsene Wenger has hinted at two more arrivals at the Emirates this summer, and is believed to have enquired about the availability of Hummels. With Thomas Vermaelen’s future in doubts, Wenger is keen to sign another center back and he has been a long-time admirer of the German defender.

Despite Jurgen Klopp’s insistence on retaining Hummels, whose current contract expires in 2017, Arsenal and Manchester United are now set to rival for the £30m-rated center back. If Arsenal can sell Vermaelen to Barcelona and snatch Hummels ahead of Manchester United, it will certainly make up for what they experienced during the Robin van Persie saga.
