Gabriel Paulista: It’s Gratifying To Be At Arsenal

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of 24-year old center back Gabriel Paulista from Villarreal for a reported fee of €15.2m. The Gunners have tied him down to a long-term deal that will keep him at the club until 2019 after securing his work permit. Arsenal’s defense has been stretched this season as manager Arsene Wenger has had to use Calum Chambers, Nacho Monreal and Mathieu Debuchy in the center of the defense despite the trio being full backs. Arsenal failed to sign a center back after selling Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona in the summer transfer window and that has come back to haunt them as they haven’t had a good season defensively thanks to some substandard displays. Paulista, who was a regular for Villarreal, revealed that he was delighted to sign for a big club like Arsenal, “I came from a club that is not that big in Brazilian football. I went to Spanish football and that was another dream come true, to play […] Read more »

Fabregas: Chelsea always wanted to win more than Arsenal

Over the years, several quality players have left Arsenal for pastures new. Some, like Robin van Persie, left in acrimonious circumstances, while others such as Cesc Fabregas and Mathieu Flamini left on happier terms. One of the two – Flamini has returned to Arsenal, while the other Fabregas, the club’s former captain and legend, turned Judas when he decided to join fierce rivals Chelsea at the start of the summer. The Spaniard had a chance to return to his former club, but wasn’t able to as the Gunners appeared uninterested in the player’s services. Yet, the 27 year-old has a soft spot for the club where he spent eight years. “At Arsenal, we were most of the games [against Chelsea] the better team, but we were always losing,” Fabregas told The Daily Telegraph. “I always said the same thing. Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal. Then one long ball or one free-kick, Drogba goal. It was always the same. “That tells you […] Read more »

FA Cup: Arsenal face Middlesbrough next

Holders Arsenal may have been convincing in the first half against Brighton on Sunday, but were given a real scare in the second half, and will need to do a whole lot better if they are to get past their fifth round opponents – Middlesbrough. The Smoggies put in a stunning performance at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, knocking out Premier League champions Manchester City. The club are currently being managed by former Jose Mourinho assistant Aitor Karanka who has done quite a job, steering the team to second place in the Championship. Karanka will now take his team to the Emirates Stadium, knowing that they will, once again, have nothing to lose. With City and Chelsea both eliminated, Manchester United will know that winning the FA Cup may actually be a realistic possibility now. Nevertheless, they must do a whole lot better when they play Cambridge at home in the fourth round replay. Interestingly, the Red Devils are slated […] Read more »

Gabriel Paulista: How The Brazilian Will Fit In At Arsenal

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who has often been criticized for not spending enough time working on the defensive side of his team’s game, seems to have turned over a new leaf as witnessed in the Gunners’ 2-0 win over Manchester City last weekend. Following it, the Frenchman has gone into the transfer market and bought Brazilian centre-half Gabriel Paulista from Villareal. Here’s a look at the 24-year-old who cost the Londoners £15m. Who is Gabriel Paulista? Born in Sao Paulo, Paulista has only played for two clubs in his career so far. As a talented youngster, Paulista was spotted by Esporte Clube Vitória from where he graduated into a professional footballer. Paulista, who is nicknamed Gabriel, made his debut for the club in March 2010 in a 3-1 win over Campeonato Baiano championship. In his early years at the club, Paulista played as a right-back and wasn’t a first team regular up until 2011. As he grew in stature, he […] Read more »

Walcott and Ozil expected to start for Arsenal against Brighton

With the elimination of Manchester City and Chelsea, reigning champions Arsenal will go into their FA Cup fourth round clash against Brighton, knowing that they’re not only favourites for the tie but also the competition as a whole. What’s more, the Gunners go into the contest on the back of an inspired performance at the Etihad Stadium where they registered a stunning 2-0 win. Yet, taking their upcoming opponents for granted is not something that Arsene Wenger is prepared to do. “We have to study them well,” Wenger told ESPN.  ”In the cup, you have to be ready from the start and people like that can always surprise you if you are not ready.” Two years ago, Wenger’s team had met Brighton at the same stage and were put through quite a test. At the time, the Seagulls were being managed by Gus Poyet and the team was in good form, fighting for a place in the playoffs. “It is […] Read more »
