RB Leipzig have reportedly held talks with Chelsea over signing Timo Werner, with the German striker’s future at Stamford Bridge looking bleak.

According to 90 min, Timo Werner is garnering plenty of interest from Bundesliga clubs, with RB Leipzig looking to get ahead of the chasing pack. The German outfit have held talks with Chelsea to negotiate a deal for the 26-year-old striker, although nothing has been finalised yet.

Timo Werner is reportedly considering his options ahead of the 2022/23 season, as he finds himself in an unusual position at Chelsea. Thomas Tuchel is not entirely convinced by the German international’s ability to fit into his system, having been unable to get the best out of him in the last 24 months.

While Werner played an essential part in winning the UEFA Champions League, his goalscoring record in the last two seasons has been a cause for concern. The 26-year-old striker has ten Premier League goals in 56 appearances, which is far away from Chelsea’s usual standards.

Moreover, the arrival of Raheem Sterling in the close season has threatened to push him down the pecking order, as the England international is a sure starter on the left side of the Chelsea attack. Hence, Werner is considering his options, with plenty of interest coming from Bundesliga clubs, including RB Leipzig.

Before joining Chelsea, Werner had a magnificent season with Leipzig, but he has never been able to replicate that prolific form in England. However, a return to his old stomping ground could improve his fortunes, given there is a place in Hansi Flick’s World Cup squad at stake.

Werner needs to play regularly in the upcoming season or risk losing a spot in the national squad. Borussia Dortmund have also shown interest in the 26-year-old, given they received unfortunate news regarding summer signing Sebastien Haller, who is likely to miss a considerable period due to his medical treatment.

As for Werner, Leipzig have taken the next steps in pursuing the forward and held talks with Chelsea over a potential move. In addition, there were reports of Josko Gvardiol being involved as part of the deal, which the German club have rubbished so far.

Leipzig hope to find an agreement to sign Werner in this window and remain aware of the growing interest in the German forward. However, some reports have claimed that Chelsea will look to hold on to Werner, as selling him would significantly weaken their squad ahead of the new season.

There could be some complicated factors in completing the transfer, but the Bundesliga giants are keen on finding a solution. However, the race could intensify if Chelsea clarify their stance and prepares to sell the 26-year-old striker.
