Borussia Dortmund are reportedly leading the race to land Chelsea attacker Timo Werner this summer.

According to Fichajes, Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund are in the pole position to land Chelsea attacker Timo Werner in the ongoing transfer window.

The German international was a bonafide star for RB Leipzig, banging in goals for fun. This earned Werner a big-money move to Chelsea two years ago, but he has struggled to replicate the same form at Stamford Bridge.

Primarily a striker, Werner is capable of playing anywhere along the frontline. At 26, he is entering his prime and should be playing week in and week out. Despite being Chelsea’s senior-most striker following Romelu Lukaku’s departure, Werner is far from an automatic choice to lead the line.

The situation at Chelsea has brought the player to the attention of Borussia Dortmund. The Bundesliga giants lost Erling Haaland to Manchester City before signing Sebastien Haller from Ajax Amsterdam. The Ivory Coast international has since been diagnosed with a health issue, meaning Dortmund need to bring in another striker.

In Werner, they could have a player who is not just proven in the German top flight but also has a point to prove. The 26-year-old’s reputation has taken a beating at Stamford Bridge, and with the 2022 FIFA World Cup coming up, he cannot afford to not have a starring role that guarantees regular minutes.

Capable of not just leading the line but also linking up in a front three, Werner’s burst of pace and movement make him a natural fit for Dortmund’s style of play. The Chelsea attacker could link up with Karim Adeyemi and Jude Bellingham and take the Bundesliga by storm on his second coming.

Despite his poor form and lack of consistency, Werner appears to have the backing of Thomas Tuchel. The Chelsea boss is keen to keep hold of the forward despite there being significant interest in his services. Tuchel’s stance makes sense given that Werner’s departure will leave his side with just Michy Batshuayi and Armando Broja as striking options.

With Lukaku gone, Chelsea will do well to put their faith in Werner. It is not late for the German international to resurrect his career, and a fast start to the 2022/23 campaign could do wonders for his confidence. The Chelsea forward has the talent at his disposal to be a match-winner, and the upcoming campaign could very well be the final opportunity to save his career at the Bridge.
