RB Leipzig are keen to bring back former marksman Timo Werner, two years after he left the Bundesliga for Chelsea.

According to Florian Plettenberg on Twitter, Bundesliga giants RB Leipzig are considering a summer move for former striker Timo Werner ahead of the 2022/23 season.

The German international was one of the most prolific strikers in Europe during his time with Leipzig. He made the move to Chelsea in 2020 but has struggled to replicate his best at Stamford Bridge. He instead joins a long list of strikers who have fallen short of expectations in Blue.

Just two years on, Werner’s time at the Bridge might be up, and he could return to the Red Bull Arena, a place that saw him make a name for himself as a top-level marksman.

The Blues are keen on signing a defender and have now joined the race to sign RB Leipzig Nordi Mukiele. The 24-year-old looked set to move to Paris Saint-Germain, but the Blues have now thrown their hat into the fray. Whether they will now offer Werner in part exchange or otherwise remains to be seen.

At 26, Werner is entering his prime and still has much football left in him. Whether it be the tactics or just a general lack of confidence, he has failed to reach his potential in Blue. A return to Germany might give him a shot at redemption, resetting his career and starting afresh.

Leipzig have done well in recent years but lack the trophies to show for it. Pairing Werner with the excellent Christopher Nkunku could give the Bundesliga side arguably the most potent frontline in the league. Werner can also take on the mantle of the star striker should Nkunku leave the club in the years to come.

As things stand, there is a long way to go before Werner can return to Leipzig. Chelsea have already parted ways with Romelu Lukaku (on loan), and losing Werner will leave them with just Armando Broja as a specialist striker going into the new season. Whether Thomas Tuchel is willing to take the risk remains to be seen.

With the 2022 FIFA World Cup on the horizon, the 26-year-old Werner has to prove to Hansi Flick that he deserves a spot in the Germany squad for the showpiece event. Whether a return to Leipzig will aid him in doing so is the question.
