Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly among the clubs keeping tabs on Palmeiras’ Uruguayan left-back Joaquin Piquerez.

According to GOAL France’s Marc Mechenoua, Tottenham Hotspur have set their sights on Palmeiras defender Joaquin Piquerez, who is also on the radars of Marseille and an unnamed German club.

Piquerez started at Defensor Sporting in Uruguay before joining River Plate Montevideo in 2019. But after spending just six months at the club, the 23-year-old moved to Penarol in January 2020, where he continued his progression, making 53 appearances and setting up 11 goals.

Piquerez left Penarol for Palmeiras last summer and has performed well for the Brazilian club. In 49 appearances, the left-back has contributed one goal and three assists, forcing his way into the Uruguayan national team. And his progress in South America has alerted clubs in Europe, with Tottenham among the ones interested in the 23-year-old.

Tottenham have strengthened their options for the left wing-back department this summer with the signing of Ivan Perisic. The veteran Croatian signed on a free transfer after his contract at Inter Milan expired.

Tottenham also have Ryan Sessegnon and Sergio Reguilon as options for the position. However, the latter is out of favour and will be allowed to leave this summer, with a move to Sevilla being talked about in the media. Even then, manager Antonio Conte can call upon the services of Ben Davies, who was largely used as a left centre-back last season but will be freed from the role after Clement Lenglet’s signing.

So, Tottenham’s interest in the 23-year-old Piquerez does come as a bit of a surprise. A move for the Uruguayan international seems like a highly unlikely prospect at this moment, even though the Lilywhites admire and appreciate his talents and potential.

Instead, Tottenham are likely to focus their attention on bringing in a new creative midfielder, with James Maddison of Leicester City on their radars. The north London club are also closing in on the signing of Djed Spence to shore up their options in the right-back position. A few more transfers could be expected as Conte looks to build a squad that can compete with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.

However, a move for Joaquin Piquerez is unlikely to materialise this summer, and the Uruguayan could potentially move to France or Germany.
