Sevilla have progressed in talks to sign Sergio Reguilon, as they plan to bring back the Spanish left-back on a season-long loan from Tottenham.
According to Football Insider, Sergio Reguilon is edging closer to rejoining Sevilla, with the Andalusian club in advanced talks with Tottenham over a season-long loan deal. The Spanish full-back is not considered a part of Antonio Conte’s plans and is free to depart from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to return to La Liga.
Tottenham paid £27 million for the transfer of Sergio Reguilon in 2020 after the left-back had excelled in the previous season on loan at Sevilla. His performances warranted Real Madrid to include a buy-back clause, and Spurs seemed to have landed a promising player.
Reguilon followed up on the promise with good displays in the two seasons he has been in north London, making the left-back position his own. However, the arrival of Antonio Conte demanded more from his role, and the Spaniard has failed to convince the Tottenham manager of his worthiness.
Despite missing the last five games of the season through a groin injury, Reguilon was the second choice by then, as Conte preferred Ryan Sessegnon at left wing-back. The Tottenham manager wants to keep the latter in his plans and has reportedly told the club to sell Reguilon. Moreover, the Spaniard is not part of the club’s pre-season tour to South Korea, like fellow outcasts Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, and Harry Winks.
The arrival of Ivan Perisic on a two-year deal has been the clearest indication concerning Reguilon’s impending departure from Tottenham. The experienced Croat and Sessegnon will be deployed in the left wing-back slot in the upcoming season, while the Spaniard is attracting interest from La Liga giants Sevilla.
Sevilla want to re-sign Reguilon to replace new Aston Villa signing Ludwig Augustinsson. The Andalusian club are in advanced talks with Tottenham over a season-long loan deal for the Tottenham defender and remain confident of getting the move over the line.
Reguilon does not suit Conte’s requirements, and considering Real Madrid are no closer to exercising their buy-back clause, a move to Sevilla makes sense. He could play regularly at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium, hoping to return to Conte’s plans for the 2023/24 season.
Tottenham and Reguilon are tied to a contract until 2025; hence Spurs are not overly concerned about selling him outright in this window. A good season at Sevilla could help Spurs retain his value before probably thinking about a sale next summer.
At Sevilla, Reguilon could return to a place of comfort and regain his confidence in the familiar environs of La Liga ahead of a crucial season. A loan move seems beneficial for all parties involved, while the Spanish club will be able to replace an outgoing left-back with a player Julen Lopetegui certainly likes.
