Liverpool are reportedly in advanced negotiations to secure the signing of teenage prodigy Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen in the summer.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are well-positioned to beat Leeds United in the race to sign Aberdeen defender Calvin Ramsay, with the Reds in advanced talks over a summer transfer.

A product of the Aberdeen youth setup, Ramsay has been with the Dons since 2012 and broke into the first-team setup in March last year at the age of 17. Since then, he has gradually developed into a regular in the side for the Scottish giants and featured 33 times in the 2021/22 campaign, racking up a return of one goal and nine assists.

Ramsay is a regular for the Scottish Under-21 national team as well, despite his young age and has made three appearances for the team. His rapid rise to prominence has not gone unnoticed in England, with several clubs, including Liverpool and Leeds United, taking note of the youngster’s progression.

Liverpool are in the market for a new right-back who can provide cover to Trent Alexander-Arnold in the squad. Joe Gomez and James Milner have been asked to do the job so far, but the former is staring at an uncertain future at Anfield while the latter is in the final phase of his career. Neco Williams had been groomed for the role, but the Welshman looks set to be sold permanently to Fulham in the summer.

So, Jurgen Klopp’s side need a new player who can operate as a backup for Alexander-Arnold, with Liverpool narrowing in on Ramsay as their desired option. At the same time, Leeds United are also keen on signing the 18-year-old Scottish prodigy in the upcoming transfer window.

The Whites are seeking to add more competition in the right-back slot where they do not have quality options beyond senior pro Luke Ayling. Ramsay, to that end, has been identified as a target given his potential and manager Jesse Marsch’s track record of working with young talents.

However, as per the report, Liverpool are ahead of Leeds United in the race to sign Ramsay, with the Reds in advanced negotiations with Aberdeen over a move. The Dons, for their part, are ready to cash in on their prized youngster as they need funds and will demand a seven-figure sum for the 18-year-old. The report states that a deal of around £3 million, including add-ons could do the trick.

Liverpool will still need to negotiate contract terms with the youngster and his role in the squad, which could be a concern as he is the first-choice starter at Aberdeen, but will have to play second-fiddle to Alexander-Arnold if he joins the Merseysiders. As for Leeds, they are already looking at other options like Rasmus Kristensen of Red Bull Salzburg.
