Edinson Cavani, a target for Barcelona, has reportedly been approached by La Liga giants Sevilla over a possible move in the January transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Edinson Cavani is no longer a priority target for Barcelona, even though he remains on their shortlist of targets. However, the Manchester United striker has been contacted by La Liga giants Sevilla over a move in the January transfer window.

Edinson Cavani has proven to be a dependable asset for Manchester United since arriving on a free transfer on Deadline Day in the summer transfer window of 2020. However, the ongoing campaign has been one to forget for the veteran striker, as a spate of niggling fitness issues has blighted him. In addition, Cristiano Ronaldo’s return has pushed him down the pecking order.

As a result, the 34-year-old has managed just 274 minutes of game-time across eight appearances this season, scoring one goal in the process. Cavani’s struggles this season have invariably paved the way for widespread speculation over his future, with Barcelona and Sevilla reportedly keen on signing him.

Barcelona’s keenness to sign Cavani is understandable, considering Xavi Hernandez can no longer call upon the services of Sergio Aguero. The Argentine striker has called time on his glittering career as his heart ailment restricts him from taking the field again. Aguero’s retirement leaves Martin Braithwaite and Luuk de Jong as the only strikers at the Barcelona manager’s disposal.

With neither player inspiring much confidence as a regular, the Blaugrana could do with a new striker, even though Ferran Torres will join the club in January. To that end, Cavani is a viable target for Barcelona. However, the Catalan giants face stiff competition from La Liga rivals Sevilla in his pursuit.

The interest from Sevilla makes sense, as Youssef En-Nesyri and Munir El Haddadi will be unavailable in January due to their impending participation at the Africa Cup of Nations. That will leave Rafa Mir as the only other striker available to Julen Lopetegui, making Cavani a viable target. The Andalusian giants have also contacted the Manchester United striker’s representatives.

However, Cavani is more eager to join Barcelona instead of their La Liga rivals and is waiting to see if they launch the offensive for him in January. However, recent reports have claimed that the La Liga heavyweights have cooled their interest in the 34-year-old, while Mundo Deportivo claims that Cavani is no longer a priority for them. So, it remains to be seen if Sevilla can pounce by signing the veteran striker this winter.
