Sevilla are reportedly interested in signing Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani with star-forward Youssef En-Nesyri sidelined for three months due to injury.

According to a report in Fichajes, Sevilla are plotting an ambitious swoop for Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani, who continues to be ‘ostracised’ at Old Trafford ever since the arrival of Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

Sevilla’s La Liga title aspirations this campaign have been dealt a huge blow, with star front-man Youssef En-Nesyri suffering a setback in his road to recovery from a hamstring injury that he picked up last month. The Moroccan is set to be sidelined for at least another three months.

The Spanish side currently sit third in the league, only one point adrift of table-toppers Real Sociedad with a game in hand. Los Nervionenses are a genuine contender in the title race, but their lack of quality depth in the attacking department can come back to haunt them later in the season.

This has forced them to dip into the winter transfer market for attacking reinforcements to provide manager Julen Lopetegui with apt rotation options. Club’s Sporting director Monchi has already compiled a three-man transfer target shortlist. One of the names popping on his list is Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani.

The Uruguayan attacker joined Manchester United in the summer of 2020 on a free transfer and enjoyed an impressive debut campaign at Old Trafford, bagging ten goals and three assist from just 13 Premier League starts. He also played a key part in Red Devils’ run to the Europa League final, contributing with six goals and three assists.

This red-hot goal-scoring form prompted the Mancunian giants to extend his deal for another year. However, the 34-year-old has struggled for game-time this season following the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, featuring in just over 270 minutes of football across all competitions this season. Although both strikers have recently been paired in a front-two, the minutes are bound to fall for the Uruguayan star regardless.

Brazilian outfit Palmeiras have expressed interest in signing the South American star after his contract at Old Trafford ends in June 2022. Still, Cavani will likely have several top-level options on the table after showing his consistent output at Manchester United.

Signing an elite marksman like Cavani would be a coup for Sevilla. The 34-year-old’s goal-poaching skills will add even more venom to their frontline. His understated work rate will raise the overall standards at Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, ultimately boosting their hopes for a remarkable La Liga triumph. However, the La Liga side would probably have to stretch their wage bill to accommodate the Uruguayan international.

It would also be a big loss for Manchester United amidst their ongoing problems on the pitch. Cavani offers energetic pressing and exceptional movement upfront. And with Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho failing to make an impact this season, it becomes vital for Red Devils to keep one of their reliable forwards to get out of this slump sooner rather than later.

Only time will tell whether Sevilla will land their target or ‘El Matador’ ends up staying at United making a complete U-turn.
