Barcelona have reportedly cooled interest in Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani, instead prioritising a summer move for either Erling Haaland or Dusan Vlahovic.

According to reputed Spanish journalist Gerard Romero, Barcelona’s pursuit of Edinson Cavani is set to end in a whimper, as they have ceded interest in the Manchester United forward. Instead, the Blaugrana will be prioritising the arrival of either Erling Haaland or Dusan Vlahovic in next summer’s transfer window.

Edinson Cavani has made quite a splash since joining Manchester United on a free transfer in October 2020. The Uruguayan forward might have been a panic buy, as widespread reports suggested, but he has been worth his weight in gold for Manchester United thus far.

The 34-year-old may have featured sparingly this season, having managed just 274 minutes of action over six outings, scoring just one goal in the process. However, Manchester United fans will fondly remember the veteran forward for last season’s exploits when he eventually departs Old Trafford. And for weeks now, Cavani has been heavily linked with Barcelona over a possible January move.

Widespread reports have also claimed that Cavani is the priority target for Barcelona heading into the January transfer window. And the Blaugrana’s interest in the Uruguayan international makes sense, as Xavi has been left with Martin Braithwaite and Luuk de Jong as the only natural strikers at his disposal following Sergio Aguero’s decision to call time on his career.

With Braithwaite best utilised as a backup option and de Jong proving to be a dud since arriving on loan from Sevilla in the summer, Barcelona’s need for a striker has been accentuated. To that end, Cavani is a viable target for Barcelona, with recent suggestions pointing towards talks between the club and the Manchester United striker reaching an advanced stage.

Cavani reportedly even reached a principle agreement to join Barcelona, but all that has come to nought, with the Catalan giants cooling their interest in him. Instead of signing the Manchester United forward in January, Barcelona will prioritise signing a big-name striker next summer, with Erling Haaland and Dusan Vlahovic on their radar.

However, Barcelona might not have been able to sign Cavani anyway, as the Red Devils are keen on keeping hold of the 34-year-old till the summer at the very least, according to Daily Mail. So, it looks like Cavani is staying put at Manchester United till the end of the season, with a move to Barcelona unlikely to see the light of the day.
