According to reports, Manchester United are interested in signing Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos in order to strengthen the defence for Van Gaal. Along with United, Manchester City and Arsenal too are interest in the Spaniard and are keeping a close eye on his contract negotiations with Florentino Perez.
Sergio Ramos has been excellent for Real Madrid in the past two seasons and has matured into an able leader under Carlo Ancelotti. His ability to organise the defence, read the game and score frequently from set-pieces has earned him several plaudits and it seems that Manchester United along with City and Arsenal are looking to sign the ‘unsettled’ Spaniard in a bid to improve their defence.
It is not surprising that Manchester United are in the market looking for a defender and it seems that they have identified ‘unsettled’ Sergio Ramos as a potential target. It was earlier revealed that Ramos, whose contract with Madrid expires in 2017, is not satisfied with the ongoing negotiations regarding his contract extension with Florentino Perez. Arrigo Sacchi, Real Madrid’s former Director revealed that though Sergio Ramos wants to stay at Real Madrid, Florentino Perez is not willing to meet his monetary demands.
“I want to stay, but Florentino offers me less money… What do you think?”, is what the defender is reported to have said to Sacchi.
Sacchi however advised Ramos to stay put at the Santiago Bernabeu and to not risk his comfortable position in Spain.
“You have to stay. Take a look at what Kaká and Shevchenko did. They were just fine in AC Milan and decided to leave for a bigger contract and ended up shortening their careers. You are very well here, you have to stay.”
Sergio Ramos however denied these reports and confirmed his loyalty to Real Madrid by claiming that he was not motivated by money.
“Will all due respect to Arrigo Sacchi, I’m not worried about my extension. I am not moved by money, and the happiness of the people I love and my own happiness is what really matters.”
He also spoke about his future after the Club World Cup semi-finals and remarked that he wanted to stay at Real Madrid.
“I’m grateful to Sacchi because he helped with my signing, but as I explained on Twitter, money doesn’t move my life, never. It depends on my own happiness and also the President’s happiness. I’m not worried about the extension, that’s my agent’s business, I still got a couple of years left in my contract and my plan is to stay with the team that has given me almost everything I have.”
THT VERDICT: Though Ramos might be temporarily at unease with his contract negotiations at Real Madrid, it is unlikely that he will leave Real Madrid where he looks set to become the Captain after Iker Casillas’ departure. Real Madrid too will be keen to retain the services of the Spaniard who is counted amongst the best defenders in the world. However United could sweep in with a highly lucrative contract in a bid to sign Sergio Ramos. The presence of other Spaniards such as David De Gea, Juan Mata and Ander Herrera at Manchester might further convince Ramos to take the plunge into English Football.
