Real Madrid won the UEFA Champions League for record 10th time by beating Atletico Madrid in extra time but skipper Casillas has said that he takes the responsibility for his mistake which allowed their city rivals a goal.

Real Madrid were rescued by Sergio Ramos’ injury time equalizer as Atletico had taken a lead in 36th minute of the game. Casillas was caught out of position for Diego Godin’s equalizer and the captain knows it was a big mistake.

Casillas was speaking to UEFA.com. He said: “The goal we conceded was an absurd goal. It brought us down a bit, because as a team you feel very responsible for it, and you see that the team, as much as you want them to, doesn’t respond. But that’s football, and in the 90th minute, in injury time [Madrid equalised]. In the end, the [equaliser] was a fair result, and it took us into extra time. Real were hurting physically in that extra time, but I also think we were superior to Atlético Madrid. In the end [we] are the deserved winners of this European trophy.”

Real Madrid’s win ended their 12 year wait for La Decima and the captain is very proud of his teams’ achievement. “It’s an incredible joy; after such a long time, a lot of emotions run through your head. It is a great privilege to make millions of people happy; not only the people who came here to Lisbon, but also the people watching it on television and in all countries.” Casillas is the only member of current team who was also part of 2002 champions.

In the whole tournament, Real played the best football and captain Casillas has claimed that his team deserved to win the title. “For the effort we’ve put in, I think we deserve to be kings of Europe: ten times European champions, I think that’s something incredible. After coming close for three years, but just shy of playing in a final, we’ve got justice.”

The Real legend knows that to win the title, quality of your game is not the only criteria, mental strength is equally important. He said: “We suffered and showed courage, devotion, strength, and we didn’t give up. It’s been a tremendous final and season, delightful, even though we went through the mill; but Real Madrid deserve it.”

Meanwhile, Casillas’ teammate Gareth Bale also spoke to UEFA.com. He said that Real Madrid’s La Decima is a proud moment for everybody and they totally deserve it. “It’s an amazing feeling to win the Champions League. And yes, it was a hard fought game, they made it very difficult for us, but yes, we showed our character that we’ve got in the team and eventually we were able to win”.
