Manchester United avenged their recent loss in the Premier League at the hands of Liverpool as David Moyes’ men knocked out their rivals from the League Cup.
United were in desperate need of a good result against Liverpool last night after an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Manchester City in the league. Having made a poor start to their league campaign, lot of fans and critics began to question David Moyes’ ability to rally this Manchester United side against strong opponents. But Moyes and his boys responded well against Liverpool and knocked out their rivals from the league cup with a solid performance at home.
As expected both David Moyes made a lot of changes to the side that was fielded against Manchester City in their last game. Liverpool on the other hand made only two changes to the side that lost against Southampton in the league. But Brendan Rodgers was boosted by the return of Luis Suarez after the Uruguayan international served out his 10-match suspension.
United start the game on the front foot and it was clear to see that the players were desperate to prove a point. A lot of the players who started last night, had a point to prove to David Moyes. The United manager will now surely consider the likes of Kagawa, Nani and Hernandez in the next league fixture after this performance.
Much of the post-match talks were around the possible impact of Suarez in this Liverpool side and the talismanic striker did show glimpses of his brilliance in this game, but couldn’t pull Liverpool over the line. Instead it was Javier Hernandez of Manchester United who made the most telling contribution in this match with his wonderfully taken goal at the start of the second half, from a corner. It was an exquisite finish, the type one normally expects from the little Mexican – surely he will be preferred over Welbeck in the next game.
David Moyes was delighted with the result and highlighted the importance of this win after what happened at the Etihad.
“What was important was that the whole club showed that we were hurt by the game on Sunday.
“We didn’t perform to our levels. And they’ve gone out and the players have done a great job to get us a big result, so I’m really pleased with them.
“We know we have to improve. I’m getting to know them. They’re a really good team; they won the Premiership last year. But we need to make sure that we’re looking to improve as well.” – The Manchester United manager said.
Moyes was quick to point out how critics were putting up stats about his personal record against the ‘big’ clubs and he hoped to have proved a point to them.
“Somebody told me that before the game. That’s the way it is.
“Everybody at the moment seems to be picking a stat out — you know, I’ve not won here or I’ve done this or I’ve not done that. Obviously that’s one of the good ones, because I’ve not had that many good ones.” – Moyes added.
Brendan Rodgers on the other hand, saw this defeat as an opportunity to concentrate more on their league campaign without any distraction.
“Now we can only concentrate on the league through to Christmas, so we have to make sure that we stay up in that top six in the league, keep fighting, and hopefully we can reinforce again in January,” – Rodgers said.
He was also pleased with the way the travelling fans welcomes Luis Suarez back into the folds and hoped that the striker can have a big impact at the club.
“You heard them at the beginning. The support that they have given him is unheralded, really.
“They were brilliant towards him and he’s given them everything. He had a clap to the crowd before the match started, so he recognises everything they’ve given him.
“Now he’s just got to get his head down and give them that great talent that he has.” – The Liverpool managed added.
Liverpool dominated possession especially in the later stages of the match, though they failed to break through the United defence. What was also apparent was that both the sides attacked mostly through their right wings.
