Barcelona and Manchester United are reportedly advancing in talks over a late move for 21-year-old American defender Sergino Dest.

According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Barcelona and Manchester United have begun talks to discuss a move for Sergino Dest in the ongoing transfer window. The American defender is open to joining the Red Devils, with Barcelona demanding €20 million to part ways with him.

Sergino Dest has struggled to perform consistently since joining Barcelona from Ajax nearly two years ago. The Blaugrana would have hoped for the USMNT international to be the long-sought Dani Alves successor, and the early signs were bright as he produced some memorable performances.

But the 21-year-old has dropped down the pecking order since Xavi Hernandez took over from Ronald Koeman as the Barcelona manager. Dest even went behind Alves when the veteran Brazilian defender rejoined Barcelona for a brief stint in the second half of the 2021/22 season.

The American defender has now become surplus to requirements at Camp Nou, with Xavi omitting him from the matchday squad to take on Rayo Vallecano last weekend. And Manchester United might be Dest’s next destination as he looks to get his career back on track, with Barcelona demanding €20 million in exchange for his services.

The interest from Manchester United stems from the inconsistencies of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot. Interestingly, the two Manchester United right-backs have popped up on Barcelona’s radar over a possible move this summer as the Catalan giants look to bring in a right-back to replace Alves and Dest.

Recent reports have claimed that the Red Devils are hopeful of signing the 21-year-old from Barcelona. And as per SPORT, Dest is warming up to the idea of joining Manchester United, with Barcelona initiating discussions over a possible €20 million move for the USMNT international.

The talks between Manchester United and Barcelona are advancing, and a summer move might be on the cards. But it will be interesting to see if the Premier League heavyweights shell out €20 million to secure the services of the young defender. Manchester United will also need to offload Wan-Bissaka to make room for Dest, whose Barcelona future seems non-existent.
