Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly blocked Bryan Gil’s move to Valencia this summer despite the player having an agreement with the La Liga side.

According to Hector Gomez on Twitter, Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur have pulled the plug on Bryan Gil’s potential move to Spanish giants Valencia.

The 21-year-old arrived in North London from Sevilla last year but has struggled to garner much game-time at Tottenham. Gil has made a mere 20 appearances for Spurs, making one assist. He spent the second half of the 2021/22 campaign on loan at Valencia and appears to have made an impression at the Mestalla.

Los Che had already agreed to personal terms with the Spanish attacker, and a move to Valencia appeared to be on the cards. With the transfer close, Tottenham have now stepped in and pulled the rug from under Valencia’s feet. The 21-year-old now looks set to stay on at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Valencia are keen on a right-winger and are already looking at alternatives. LOSC Lille star Timothy Weah and Watford’s Nacho Pussetto are now being monitored, and given that the summer transfer window will close in around a fortnight, one cannot blame them.

Whether this spells the end for their interest in Gil remains to be seen. The young Spaniard is not guaranteed a starting spot at Tottenham, and it is difficult to see him change that anytime soon. Antonio Conte has orchestrated a rebuild of sorts this summer and has brought in several players, who are ahead of Gil in the pecking order.

Conte is well known for his intense brand of football, and given the demands it puts on his favours, having strength in depth is never a bad thing. Gil might not be a match-winner yet, but he has enough in his tank to do a job if called upon. Having him available will give Conte some food for thought, especially in cup competitions.

While that may be great news for Tottenham, Gil would have been better off moving to Valencia. With the FIFA World Cup coming up, his best chance of making the Spanish squad would have been if he garnered regular playing time. With that out of the window, it remains to be seen if Conte will spring a surprise or two.
