Premier League giants Manchester United are reportedly considering signing Sergino Dest from Barcelona in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Barcelona defender Sergino Dest is the subject of interest from Manchester United over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Red Devils are keen on bolstering the right-back unit ahead of the 2022/23 season, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka surplus to requirements.
Sergino Dest joined Barcelona from Ajax in October 2020, completing a dream move to Camp Nou despite still being in his teens. But the 21-year-old has struggled to stamp his authority in the last two seasons, with Xavi Hernandez, in particular, unconvinced by his abilities.
The USMNT international, who has three goals and four assists in 72 appearances for Barcelona, had also fallen behind Dani Alves in the second half of the 2021/22 season. And with the summer transfer window kicking into top gear, Dest faces an uncertain future at Camp Nou, with Barcelona open to selling him. Manchester United could offer him an escape route out of the Catalan club.
Manchester United will look to sign a right-back in the summer transfer window, as neither Aaron Wan-Bissaka nor Diogo Dalot is completely convincing as a first-choice option. While Wan-Bissaka is a dud in the final third, Dalot is susceptible in the defensive phases, thus compelling Manchester United to invest in another right-back.
The Red Devils have thus compiled a shortlist of candidates to bolster Erik ten Hag’s options, with Denzel Dumfries and Tariq Lamptey on their radar. And Dest has now emerged as a viable target for Manchester United, with the Red Devils weighing up approaching Barcelona for the 21-year-old.
Dest might be a player in a similar vein as Dalot, but the former Ajax defender has a high ceiling and might do well if he reunites with ten Hag at Manchester United. With Barcelona open to selling the 21-year-old and in the market for a right-back, things might fall into place for all parties involved.
But with Manchester United reportedly preparing a bid to sign Denzel Dumfries, Dest will likely be a fallback option for ten Hag. Barcelona will hope to see Manchester United approaching them over a possible move for the young defender in the coming weeks.
