Manchester United have reportedly entered the race to sign Red Bull Salzburg striker Benjamin Sesko, a target for Newcastle United.

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United have now joined the race to sign Red Bull Salzburg centre-forward Benjamin Sesko. The Red Devils are keen to sign a number nine this summer with reports of Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit doing the rounds. Newcastle United are also interested in the Slovenian striker, with Salzburg demanding £55 million for him.

Sesko, who has been compared to former Red Bull Salzburg and current Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, has been with the Austrian club since 2019. In three seasons for them, he has scored 12 goals and provided eight assists in 38 appearances for the club’s senior team.

Still 19 years old, Sesko scored 11 goals for Salzburg across all competitions last season and has started the new term in fine fashion, netting in both his outings so far. Recent exploits have seen some European heavyweights take note of the striker, with Manchester United now joining the chase.

The Red Devils are eager to replace Edinson Cavani, who left the club following the expiration of his contract this summer. Moreover, the possible departure of Cristiano Ronaldo could further force their hands to sign a number nine on an urgent basis.

As far as the pre-season is concerned, new manager Erik ten Hag has used a front three of Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, with the Frenchman taking a more central position. But considering Manchester United will also have UEFA Europa League to contend in, they will need depth in the striking department should Ronaldo leave.

As per football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United’s interest has not reached an advanced stage yet and they are just monitoring the teenager’s situation. The likes of Newcastle United, Bayern Munich and Liverpool are also said to be among the interested parties, with Salzburg slapping a £55 million price tag on him.

The Magpies are the most serious of those suitors, with Eddie Howe keen on getting a new striker on board at St. James’ Park. Salzburg, however, are reluctant to sell Sesko this summer, with four years remaining on his current contract with the club. The 19-year-old is one to watch out for in the future.
