Newly-promoted La Liga club Girona have held talks with Barcelona defender Oscar Mingueza over the possibility of a summer transfer.

According to Catalan newspaper ARA, as relayed by SPORT, Girona have made contact with the representatives of Barcelona star Oscar Mingueza to explore the possibility of a summer transfer.

Mingueza is a product of Barcelona’s fabled La Masia youth academy. After having become a regular in the club’s B team, the defender made his senior debut during the 2020/21 campaign under then-manager Ronald Koeman. The 23-year-old soon became a regular in the side, although his game-time took a massive hit last season.

Mingueza was no longer a regular, especially once Xavi Hernandez took over the reins of the team. And with Barcelona signing Andreas Christensen on a Bosman deal recently, the Spaniard has been pushed further out of the picture at Camp Nou and a summer exit beckons for the versatile defender.

Mingueza has been told to find a new club by Barcelona and the defender is being courted by several teams. Newly-promoted Serie A side Monza had shown an interest in the 23-year-old La Masia graduate, and now La Liga new boys Girona have also entered the race to sign Mingueza.

Girona are back in the Spanish top division via playoffs and are looking to bolster their squad to secure safety for the upcoming campaign. And as per the report, sporting director Quique Carcel has identified Mingueza as a transfer target and has held talks with the Barcelona defender’s camp over a possible transfer this summer.

Barcelona are interested in offloading Mingueza, who does not feature in Xavi’s plans, while the defender himself is ready to move on. However, a transfer to Girona could be tricky due to the 23-year-old’s wages which the newly-promoted Catalan club might be unable to afford.

Negotiations are said to be in the early stages, though, and it remains to be seen how things develop in the coming days. What is certain is that Mingueza will be leaving Barcelona this summer. With several other La Liga clubs also keen on his signing, he might end up staying in Spain.
