Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly preparing a €40 million offer for Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Piero Hincapie.

According to a report in German publication Kicker, Tottenham Hotspur are preparing a €40 million offer for Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Piero Hincapie. Spurs have been on the hunt for a central defender but are yet to sign one this summer.

Antonio Conte is eager to add a left-sided centre-back to his roster in the current transfer window and first approached Inter Milan for a possible reunion with Alessandro Bastoni. But the Italy international was reluctant to move to England and thus snubbed the opportunity to work with Conte again.

Tottenham have since been linked with multiple centre-backs, including Bastoni’s defensive partner at Inter, Milan Skriniar. They have had a long-standing interest in Hincapie, however, with the first reports of their interest in the 20-year-old emerging in February this year.

The Ecuador international is left-footed and can also play at left-back, perfectly fitting Conte’s requirements. They are thus preparing a €40 million bid for the defender but may have to work hard to convince Leverkusen into selling him.

Simon Rolfes, who is set to take over as the club’s sporting director recently hinted that the German club are confident of keeping hold of the defender, stressing that he has a ‘long contract’ with the club.

“Basically, one thing is clear: Piero has a long contract, he is a young player who is already constantly offering the highest level. We are very happy that he is here,” Rolfes told Kicker.

Hincapie joined Leverkusen just last summer from CA Talleres and made 33 appearances for the club across competitions. He still has four years left on his contract with the Bundesliga club.

Tottenham have already completed three major signings this summer. Ivan Perisic has arrived from Inter on a free transfer while Fraser Forster has joined from Southampton on a Bosman move. It was followed by the capture of midfielder Yves Bissouma from Brighton & Hove Albion.

Tottenham are now plotting to add a centre-half as an upgrade over Ben Davies for the left-sided centre-back role. With a move for Hincapie now in the works, it will be interesting to see if they can get the deal over the line. A loan move for Clement Lenglet could be on the cards for the Lilywhites if they fail to land the 20-year-old.

I’ve never even heard of Hincapie, but I hope we get him because the alternative doesn’t bear thinking about. The thought of bringing in Lenglet gives me the shudders! .

I just don’t know what it is about Lenglet but a defo no-no says my gut
