Chelsea are reportedly stepping up their interest in RC Lens wing-back Jonathan Clauss, a target for local rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
According to Italian journalist Rudy Galetti, Chelsea are prepared to step up their pursuit of RC Lens full-back Jonathan Clauss in the hope of getting the deal through quickly. The Blues are eager to beat any competition for the 29-year-old, with Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid monitoring the player’s situation as well.
Chelsea are eager to add defensive reinforcements in the summer transfer window and have identified multiple targets. The Blues will be without both Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, with the former officially joining Real Madrid and the latter poised to move to Barcelona. And the contracts of Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso are nearing completion as well.
Both the full-backs have a year remaining on their respective contracts with the club, and there have been no concrete reports of possible renewals. The Chelsea duo has also been linked with moves to Barcelona, but the Blaugrana are yet to make an official approach.
With the Blues looking at the departures of two full-backs this summer or the next, they are eager to strengthen the area this summer itself. And RC Lens’s Jonathan Clauss has emerged as an option for Chelsea, with the French international having just a year remaining on his contract with the Ligue 1 outfit.

Clauss was especially impressive in the recently-concluded season, scoring five times and assisting 11 goals in the league playing majorly as a right wing-back. His performances have caught the eyes of a few European giants, including Chelsea.
Tuchel has a strong desire to sign the 29-year-old Lens wing-back and wants to get the deal through quickly. Chelsea currently have Reece James as their first-choice right wing-back, but they will still like to add more depth to the department, especially if Azpilicueta departs from Stamford Bridge.
Tottenham are another club showing interest in Clauss. They are currently pursuing Middlesbrough’s Djed Spence and view Clauss as an alternative for the English youngster. Atletico Madrid are in the mix as well and another update on this transfer saga can be expected in the coming weeks.
