Chelsea have reportedly begun their pursuit of RC Lens full-back Jonathan Clauss, who is set to cost around £10 million.

According to Nizaar Kinsella, Chelsea have initiated contact with RC Lens over the summer signing of Jonathan Clauss. The wing-back has become a sought-after prospect in the market following a couple of excellent seasons at Lens, with many expecting him to join a bigger club ahead of the new season.

Chelsea have shown the desire to sign Clauss in the summer, with Thomas Tuchel believed to be an admirer. Lens value the French full-back at around £10 million, which should not pose much of an issue for Chelsea. The Blues, though, may face stiff competition from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.

A right wing-back by trade, Clauss has enjoyed immense success since his move to Lens in 2020. In just two years, he has been involved in 26 goals in just 74 competitive matches, which is an excellent return for a player who predominantly operates in the wing-back area.

Clauss’s blazing performances in Ligue 1 have been pivotal in helping Lens consistently compete for European places. They have also helped the player establish himself as a valuable asset to the French national team, with the 29-year-old already racking up four caps for his country.

In light of his success at Lens, Chelsea are determined to snap up Jonathan Clauss ahead of the new season. The Blues are likely targeting the French international as a direct replacement for Cesar Azpilicueta, who has been linked with a move to Barcelona this summer.

The Spaniard’s potential exit could leave a massive void in the right wing-back department, leaving Reece James as the only viable option in that position. That is where Clauss comes into the fray for Chelsea, especially with the French full-back making a name for himself in Ligue 1 with his attacking prowess and versatility.

Given his expertise in the wing-back position, the Frenchman could prove to be an ideal fit in Tuchel’s tactical setup. For a fee of just £10 million, he could also prove to be a bargain for Chelsea heading into the new season.

Although Atletico Madrid are described as a potential competitor in this deal, Clauss is believed to be a Chelsea fan and will prioritise a move to Stamford Bridge. Hence, the road is clear for the Londoners to grab hold of the French international, who could become the first signing under the ownership of Todd Boehly at Chelsea.
