Newcastle United are reportedly eyeing a summer move for Borussia Monchengladbach veteran Yann Sommer this summer transfer window.

According to talkSPORT, Premier League side Newcastle United are eyeing a summer move for 33-year-old goalkeeper Yann Sommer who currently plays for Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga.

A vastly experienced player, Sommer came through the senior side at FC Basel before leaving his homeland to join Gladbach in 2014. He has since impressed for the Bundesliga side, making 324 appearances for them, keeping 86 clean sheets in the process.

Sommer has just a year to go on his current deal and appears unwilling to pen an extension. This has brought the 33-year-old onto the radar of Newcastle United, who are keen to replace Martin Dubravka as their number one goalkeeper ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

The 33-year-old Slovak has impressed for the Magpies but could now make way for Sommer. The Swiss goalkeeper is a regular for both club and country and is on paper an upgrade over Dubravka. However, given that they are both of the same age, Sommer is more of a short-term fix while Newcastle United look for a younger option.

Not only is the Gladbach man a reliable shot-stopper, he is also good with the ball at his feet. This is an area where he trumps Dubravka and will give Newcastle a new dimension next season. Eddie Howe has brought back the joy of football on Tyneside, and Sommer could, in hindsight, prove to be a shrewd addition.

The Magpies were heavily linked with a move for Manchester United reserve goalkeeper Dean Henderson. The Englishman is behind David de Gea in the Old Trafford pecking order and could have done with a move to Newcastle.

Despite having a conversation with his agent, Newcastle have not followed up on their interest in the 25-year-old. The fact that Newcastle have now shifted attention to Sommer could suggest that the pursuit of the Manchester United ace has come to an end.

While Newcastle’s wealth can give them the freedom to go big in the transfer market, the reality remains that they have ways to go before being considered a top destination by the best players. Building the squad steadily is the best option for now, and taking that into account, Sommer is a solid option.

Why don’t consider a free agent one Thomas Strakosha ?!
It can be saved up the fund for other departments. What’s going on ?
