Tottenham are reportedly ready to rival Arsenal for the signature of Dominic-Calvert Lewin, but the pursuit could be tricky for Spurs.
According to football.london, Tottenham are prepared to chase Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the next window, as Antonio Conte looks for a new striker. Spurs may have to challenge Arsenal for the Everton forward’s signature, and the 25-year-old English international may think hard before considering Spurs’ interest.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has always been on the radars of multiple top clubs in the Premier League for his style of play and what he brings from the centre-forward position. The English striker has attributes that match the requirements of Arsenal and Tottenham, but their pursuits could get tricky due to Everton’s huge asking price.
The Toffees could seek at least £60 million from suitors, especially after securing safety from the relegation battle. In fact, it was Calvert-Lewin’s late strike that clinched three points against Crystal Palace and ensured their Premier League status remained intact.
Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move for Calvert-Lewin, but a dip in form and absence due to a toe injury has forced the Gunners cool their pursuit. The north Londoners have chased Gabriel Jesus and could be close to signing the Manchester City forward.
They are still some way away from signing the Brazilian as Arsenal are unwilling to pay the £55 million Manchester City are demanding. The Gunners are expected to finalise the move, but failing to do so may lead them on the trail of an alternative, such as Calvert-Lewin.
Tottenham are also trailing the Everton striker. Antonio Conte is seeking a new focal point for his attack. Spurs are also reportedly chasing Gabriel Jesus, Victor Osimhen and Martin Terrier as the search for a new forward intensifies.
The issue with Calvert-Lewin would be his need to play regularly. The 25-year-old English international is known to only play as a no.9 and cannot play from a wide role or as a second striker. Tottenham already have Harry Kane in that role, which could render the Everton striker an alternative for games where the England captain does not play.
Such a role may not be acceptable for Calvert-Lewin and hence he could be inclined to wait on Arsenal’s interest to develop further. The summer transfer window is still some time away from opening, but clubs may want to begin and conclude deals early to avoid getting dragged into transfer battles later.
