According to Brazilian journalist Bruno Andrade, Newcastle United are readying an opening offer of €70 million for Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez, who looks set to move on from Benfica this summer.

Nunez joined Benfica from UD Almeria in the summer of 2020 after impressing in his debut season with the Spanish second division side in 2019/20. The Uruguayan enjoyed a decent maiden campaign in Portugal but has turned up the heat in the current term, plundering 34 goals in 41 matches across all competitions.

Nunez put up some impressive displays in the UEFA Champions League, bagging six goals in ten matches. The 22-year-old’s performances on the continental stages have not gone unnoticed, as several top clubs from across Europe have shown an interest in signing the Uruguayan forward in the upcoming transfer window.

Newcastle United are also among Nunez’s suitors heading into the summer transfer window. The report from Bruno Andrade claims that the Magpies were amongst the earliest to show an interest in the 22-year-old, having established contact with Benfica back in December last year itself.

Newcastle United are set for a massive summer transfer window as they look to strengthen their roster to build a team capable of challenging for European football. The Toon signed a new striker in January in Chris Wood, but the former Burnley hitman has not been productive enough in front of the goal.

Callum Wilson remains a potent goalscorer, but his injury issues make him unreliable. Hence, a new top-quality forward has become a priority for Eddie Howe’s side heading into the summer transfer window. A move for Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin is being touted heavily, but Nunez also remains a top target.

The former Penarol starlet has a contract with Benfica that runs until 2025. So, it will take a big offer from Newcastle to convince the Portuguese giants to part ways with him. And, backed by their cash-rich new owners, the Tyneside outfit are now preparing a massive offer of €70 million to sign Nunez in the summer.

It remains to be seen if Benfica deem the €70 million bid acceptable or push for a higher fee, considering Nunez has no shortage of admirers, with Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United also reportedly interested in the South American striker.
