Newcastle United are poised to make a move for Everton frontman Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer.
According to Telegraph, Newcastle United are growing increasingly confident of their chances of signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin. With Everton being involved in the relegation battle, the club believe the Toffees could be forced to cash in on their striker in the summer, and the player himself could be open to joining the ranks at NUFC.
It has compelled Newcastle to weigh up a fresh bid for Calvert-Lewin. The Magpies are expected to flex their financial muscle and offer Everton the chance to cash in on their striker for a reasonable fee before his value eventually goes down due to injury and lack of action this season.
It has indeed been a difficult campaign for the Englishman this term. Coming on the back of a successful campaign, the striker saw his progress being marred by an injury early on in the season. The fractured toe left him on the sidelines for the chunk of the campaign, but even after returning to action at the start of the year, he has struggled to rekindle his scoring form.
Calvert-Lewin has scored only three goals in his 14 league matches so far. All of his goals have come before the injury meaning the striker is goalless in the Premier League since August. His struggles with form have compelled manager Frank Lampard to utilise him only as a substitute in recent weeks.
Newcastle United are not deterred by Calvert-Lewin’s lack of form, though. In Eddie Howe, they have a coach who rates the player highly and believes he can be an ideal upgrade over the current goalscoring options in Chris Wood and Callum Wilson.
In addition to signing Calvert-Lewin, the Magpies are also in pole position to acquire the services of Hugo Ekitike. The offensive combination between these two strikers could go a long way in adding further quality to the NUFC frontline and helping the club compete for European places next season.
Everton, for their part, are preparing for life without Calvert-Lewin. They have been linked with a move for former Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi and judging by his game-time, it is apparent Lampard is open to signing newer players who are more suited to his system, regardless of the club’s fate in the relegation battle.
