Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are reportedly in contact with 16-year-old Barcelona prodigy Iker Cordoba over a possible summer move.

According to a report by German outlet Sport1, Iker Cordoba is the subject of interest from Bayern Munich over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The 16-year-old Barcelona prodigy is in contact with the Bundesliga champions, who have scouted him for a long time.

Iker Cordoba is widely regarded as one of the most promising young defenders in Spain, going from strength to strength since joining Barcelona. The teenage wonderkid is currently a member of the Barcelona Juvenil B side and has made massive strides in the last few years, particularly to improve his physique.

Cordoba is a technically gifted defender who is intelligent and fast who can play as a centre-back, left-back and even a defensive midfielder. But Barcelona will be scrambling to retain the 16-year-old prodigy’s long-term future in the coming weeks, as his contract will expire next month. And such a situation has captured the attention of Bayern Munich.

The Bundesliga champions are in the market for a centre-back heading into the summer transfer window as Niklas Sule will join Borussia Dortmund in a Bosman move. Sule’s departure will leave Julian Nagelsmann with Dayot Upamecano, Lucas Hernandez and Tanguy Nianzou as the only central defenders at his disposal. Signing a centre-back is thus necessary for Bayern Munich.

To that end, Jurrien Timber has emerged on Bayern Munich’s radar, with several other central defenders also under consideration. Cordoba is also a viable long-term option for Bayern Munich. But the Bundesliga champions are likely to initially assign him to the under-19 side if he arrives from Barcelona in the summer transfer window.

In addition to Cordoba, the Bavarian giants also have Paris Saint-Germain prodigy El Chadaille Bitshiabu in their sights. And the duo could arrive to bolster the under-19 side before eventually becoming long-term solutions at the heart of the Bayern Munich defence at the first-team level.

But with Barcelona keen on keeping hold of Cordoba, Bayern Munich will be waiting with bated breath to see how the situation develops in the coming weeks. However, with Ronald Araujo recently extending his contract with Barcelona and Andreas Christensen on the verge of joining the Blaugrana in a Bosman move, Cordoba’s pathway to the first team might not be clear. It will be interesting to see if he extends his stay in Catalonia.
