La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly ramping up their efforts to tie 17-year-old Spanish prodigy Gavi down to a new contract.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Barcelona will be accelerating the efforts to secure the long-term future of Gavi. The Catalan giants are prioritising renewing terms with the 17-year-old prodigy and remain confident that they can tie him down to a new contract.

Gavi has taken Spanish football by storm this season after Ronald Koeman surprisingly promoted him to the first-team setup at the onset of the campaign. The Spanish whizkid’s promotion came in the wake of a tough summer transfer window for Barcelona, wherein they were hamstrung by a tight budget. And the teenage wonderkid has taken his opportunities with both hands.

Gavi has been a regular for Barcelona, turning 43 times across all competitions while chipping in with two goals and six assists. But the 17-year-old prodigy’s long-term future has put the Blaugrana in a spot of bother, as his contract runs out next year.

While Gavi wants to stay put at Camp Nou, there have been several obstacles along the way for FC Barcelona, with the Spanish prodigy recently rejecting a contract offer. The uncertain situation has also piqued the interest of several high profile clubs across Europe.

Premier League bigwigs Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United are keen on prising Gavi away from Barcelona. At the same time, other European heavyweights, including Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, have also shown an interest in the 17-year-old whizkid in the last few months.

But it looks like Barcelona might be getting closer to securing the youngster’s long-term future. According to the report, the Catalan giants are set to hold a meeting with Gavi’s representatives and will put a new lucrative contract on the table for him to consider.

Barcelona could finalise the renewal in the coming weeks before the players leave for the off-season break. And the La Liga heavyweights are confident that they will succeed in tying Gavi down to a new contract while hiking his release clause significantly, just as they have done with Ronald Araujo.
