La Liga heavyweights Barcelona have reportedly started direct contact with Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso, who is prioritising returning to Spain.
According to reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona and Marcos Alonso are in direct contact over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Chelsea left-back is keen on returning to Spain, keeping the Blaugrana in contention to snap him up ahead of the 2022/23 season.
Marcos Alonso is the unlikeliest success story at Chelsea, having produced several noteworthy performances at Stamford Bridge despite being extremely inconsistent. The Spaniard has excelled as a left wing-back, so it is hardly surprising that some of his best displays for Chelsea have come under Thomas Tuchel.
The 31-year-old has benefitted from Ben Chilwell’s long-term injury layoff this season, chipping in with four goals and five assists in 42 appearances thus far. But Alonso’s time at Chelsea could be end soon, with Barcelona keen on prising him away from Stamford Bridge in the summer transfer window.
Barcelona might delve into the market for a left-back in the summer transfer window as Jordi Alba has let inconsistency creep into his game due to advancing years. And with Alejandro Balde yet to settle down in the first-team setup at Camp Nou, Barcelona’s need to bolster the position has accentuated.

To that end, Jose Gaya had initially emerged as the priority target for the Blaugrana. But the Spanish international looks set to stay put at Valencia by signing a new contract with Los Che, forcing Barcelona to set sights on alternatives. Alonso has thus emerged on Barcelona’s radar, with the Catalan giants plotting a summer move for the Chelsea left-back.
According to Fabrizio Romano, there are already direct contacts between Barcelona and Alonso. And while the 31-year-old will be respectful to Chelsea and their precarious situation, he is keen on returning to Spain, having admitted to the same recently.

Barcelona will thus be in contention to prise Alonso away from Chelsea in the summer transfer window. That said, it will be interesting to see how Chelsea will respond to an approach from Barcelona, especially if their ownership situation does not get resolved anytime soon.
