La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid are reportedly weighing up the prospect of signing 21-year-old Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Jeremie Frimpong is the subject of interest from Real Madrid over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Bayer Leverkusen right-back could be the long-term successor for Dani Carvajal, a former star performer for the Bundesliga club.

Jeremie Frimpong first burst onto the scene after joining Celtic from Manchester City in 2019. But it is after moving to Bayer Leverkusen in January 2021 that the 21-year-old has upped his performance levels several notches, establishing himself as one of the best right-backs in the Bundesliga.

The youngster has enjoyed a solid 2021/22 campaign thus far, racking up two goals and eight assists in 30 appearances across all competitions and playing a key role in Bayer Leverkusen’s ascension up the Bundesliga table. Frimpong’s exploits have not gone unnoticed either, with Real Madrid among the clubs taking a note of his performances.

The interest from Real Madrid stems from Dani Carvajal’s inconsistent displays thus far this term. The Spaniard, a former Bayer Leverkusen right-back, has blown hot and cold, with his fitness woes hampering his performance levels considerably.

Carvajal’s latest sub-par display came in Real Madrid’s UEFA Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain earlier this week. The Spanish giants are thus considering entering the market for a right-back in the summer transfer window, with several players emerging on their radar.

Defenders like Dodo, Nordi Mukiele and Reece James have already been linked with Real Madrid, with Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold their preferred target. But with Liverpool unlikely to enter negotiations for the English international, the Merengues need to keep their options open, bringing Frimpong into the picture.

The 21-year-old is contracted to Bayer Leverkusen until June 2025, meaning it could take a considerable amount for Real Madrid to prise him away from the Bundesliga club. Frimpong’s playing style does fit in with Real Madrid’s philosophy, but it might be a good idea for them to keep alternate options on their wishlist, with Dodo, Mukiele and James also worth pursuing.
