La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid are reportedly keen on signing Trent Alexander-Arnold, although landing the Liverpool defender is highly unlikely.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Trent Alexander-Arnold is the preferred right-back target for Real Madrid heading into the summer transfer window. But the Spanish giants are unlikely to secure the services of the Liverpool defender, with the Reds not open to selling him.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been with Liverpool FC all his life, having joined the club’s youth setup as a six-year-old in 2004. The 23-year-old rapidly progressed through the ranks at the Merseyside outfit before breaking into the first-team squad over half a decade ago.

Since then, the English international has progressed tremendously, establishing himself as a key figure for Liverpool. Alexander-Arnold has enjoyed a solid 2021/22 campaign thus far, racking up two goals and 16 assists in 29 appearances across all competitions. The player’s exploits have not gone unnoticed, with Real Madrid among his prospective suitors.

Real Madrid could enter the market for a right-back in the summer transfer window amid Dani Carvajal’s dropping performance levels. Several fitness issues have beset the Spaniard in the past year, affecting his form. Carvajal’s latest sub-par performance came against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie.

With Lucas Vazquez not being as impressive in a makeshift role as in the 2020/21 season, signing a right-back in the summer transfer window is under consideration at Real Madrid. To that end, several players have emerged on the Merengues’ radar, including Shakhtar Donetsk star Dodo.

The Spanish giants have also been linked with Noussair Mazraoui, Reece James and Nordi Mukiele, among others. According to the report, the Liverpool defender is Real Madrid’s preferred option to pursue in the summer transfer window.

The 23-year-old is not opposed to joining Real Madrid, but Liverpool will likely put up several stumbling blocks. The Reds have no intention of selling Alexander-Arnold, meaning it is nigh on impossible for Real Madrid to prise him away from Liverpool in the summer transfer window. Los Blancos must set sights on alternatives to bolster the right-back berth.
