PSG sporting director Leonardo is still of the belief that Kylian Mbappe could stay at the club amid continued links with Real Madrid.

Paris Saint-Germain director Leonardo has insisted that Kylian Mbappe could still sign a new contract with the club and stay put in France, despite continued links to Real Madrid.

Mbappe is one of the biggest superstars in the game of football currently. The 23-year-old has enjoyed tremendous success in the game despite his young years after having burst out at AS Monaco as a teenager in 2016. The forward won the Ligue 1 title with the Principality outfit in 2016/17 before signing for PSG in the subsequent summer and has continued to scale greater heights year after year.

Mbappe has won several domestic titles and trophies with Les Parisiens and has lifted the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Nations League with the French national team. However, the 23-year-old’s time in Paris could come to an end this summer as his contract stands to expire on June 30.

Talks over a renewal have been ongoing for a while but without much success as it is believed that Mbappe has his heart set on a transfer to Real Madrid. The Spanish heavyweights made several attempts to sign the 23-year-old forward last summer but were rebuffed by PSG. However, with the striker set to become a free agent, they stand a great chance of securing his services.

Reports have already claimed that Real Madrid and Mbappe have an agreement over a possible transfer later this year. But those claims appear to be wide off the mark as PSG are still harbouring hopes of convincing their superstar to prolong his stay at Parc des Princes beyond the ongoing season.

Speaking about the future of Mbappe during his interview with Sky Italia (h/t Goal), Leonardo said, “In Madrid, they’ve been convinced for three years that Kylian Mbappe would end up at Real Madrid. Maybe they’re a little too sure about that?”

In a separate interview with Canal+ (h/t Goal), Leonardo added, “Honestly, the discussions were always there. There is no ‘special’ meeting in Doha. Kylian, he talks with us, and we have constant communication. I think he is still in a reflection. I think there is a possibility that he stays. He can also leave. But he is thinking.”

Mbappe, for his part, has been largely coy on his future. Speaking after PSG’s Ligue 1 triumph last weekend, the 23-year-old said, “Nothing has changed – so there’s nothing to say right now.”

However, it has since been claimed that the French international has increased his financial demands to sign for Real Madrid in the summer. So, it remains to be seen if Mbappe ends up at the Santiago Bernabeu next season or continues plying his trade for PSG.
