Luuk de Jong is keen on extending his stay at Camp Nou beyond the summer, insisting every player would prefer to remain at Barcelona.

In an interview with Dutch outlet Ziggo Sport Voetbal, Luuk de Jong has spoken about the prospect of staying at Barcelona beyond the summer transfer window. The 31-year-old forward is keen on staying put at Camp Nou, asserting that every player would prefer that.

Luuk de Jong joined Barcelona on loan from Sevilla last summer and has since been a bit-part player for the Blaugrana. While the Dutch international featured fairly regularly under the tutelage of Ronald Koeman, he has become a peripheral figure since Xavi Hernandez’s arrival several months ago.

The 31-year-old has still enjoyed a decent 2021/22 campaign, scoring seven goals in 23 outings, finding the back of the net once every 122 minutes. And now, de Jong has hinted that he wants to stay put at Barcelona beyond the summer transfer window, insisting that is what every player would prefer.

Speaking with Ziggo Sport Voetbal, de Jong said, “After this season, I’m going to look at my options. I think every player would say he would prefer to stay at Barcelona. It’s not a question for me.”

Despite de Jong’s comments, it is highly unlikely that Barcelona will keep hold of him beyond the summer transfer window. The Blaugrana even wanted to get the Dutch forward off their books in the January transfer window, but he ended up remaining at Camp Nou for the second half of the 2021/22 season.

Being forced to keep hold of de Jong has worked well for Barcelona, with the 31-year-old scoring a few important goals this term. The most recent exhibition of the experienced forward being an asset came in Barcelona’s come-from-behind 3-2 win over Levante this past weekend.

But despite his heroics, Barcelona might not extend de Jong’s stay at Camp Nou, considering they are keen on signing a top-class striker in the summer transfer window. Bayern Munich talisman Robert Lewandowski has been heavily linked with Barcelona and could join Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the Catalan club’s strike force, prompting de Jong to end his spell at Camp Nou.
