Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has addressed his contract situation at the club, with his current deal set to run out at the end of the season.

Speaking after Real Madrid’s UEFA Champions League clash against Chelsea earlier this week, Luka Modric responded to questions regarding his future and his contract situation at the club.

Real Madrid qualified for the semi-finals of the Champions League after securing a 5-4 aggregate win over the current holders of the trophy. Having beaten Chelsea 3-1 in the first leg of the quarter-finals at Stamford Bridge, Los Blancos seemed all set to qualify for the next round.

But Chelsea put up a strong fightback at the Bernabeu on Tuesday night, pushing Real Madrid to the brink. At one point in the second half, the Blues were up 3-0 on the night and 4-3 ahead on aggregate, with the La Liga leaders hanging by a thread. And it was at that moment when Luka Modric stepped up and produced a moment of sublime magic to set Rodrygo Goes up for a goal.

That strike forced the game into extra time, and Karim Benzema scored in the added 30 minutes to secure an aggregate victory for Real Madrid, even though they lost on the night.

Modric put in a superlative display against Chelsea and was hailed all across the globe for his performance in a crucial encounter for Real Madrid. At the same time, it also gave way to questions over his future beyond the current season.

Modric, who will turn 37 in a few months, sees his contract with the Spanish giants run out at the end of the season. Talks over a new deal have been taking place in the background. When quizzed about the situation of his contract, the veteran superstar insisted that his focus is on seeing the season through with the team right now.

As quoted by Fabrizio Romano, Modric said, “I go year by year as always. Now the important thing is we are in the semi-finals. I give my best on the pitch to give back all the affection Madridistas show me.”

Recent reports have indicated that the 36-year-old is close to agreeing a new deal with Real Madrid. It remains to be seen if that is the case or if he decides to move on at the end of the season.
