Newcastle United have made a move to sign Barcelona attacker Ousmane Dembele, who is set to become a free agent in the summer.

According to journalist Ryan Taylor, as reported by Give Me Sport, Newcastle United have made an approach to sign Barcelona attacker Ousmane Dembele on a free transfer in the summer. The explosive forward’s current contract at Camp Nou expires at the end of the season, which has opened the door for clubs like Newcastle to offer pre-contract terms for a potential Bosman move.

“From what I understand, they’ve already made an offer to his agent for a pre-contract agreement, quite a big one as well,” Taylor told Give Me Sport. “So, there is interest in Dembele.”

Taylor’s comments suggest Newcastle United have made Dembele one of their priorities in the summer transfer window. The Frenchman was one of the focal points of the recently concluded January transfer window.

With his contract expiring at the end of the season, Barcelona were keen on offloading the player in an attempt to significantly reduce their wage bill. Although the winger was linked with a deadline day move to Chelsea, a transfer did not materialise.

Dembele’s failed January exit meant new signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, as well as other stars, including Adama Traore, had to settle for a large pay cut. It appears the winger and his representatives had their heart set on a summer move, anticipating that cash-rich clubs like Newcastle United or Paris Saint-Germain might table a lucrative offer.

As it stands, the Magpies have already made an attempt to lure the former Borussia Dortmund starlet to St. James’ Park. The club’s new owners and management alike are prepared to make him the first of many marquee investments as they look to make Newcastle one of the biggest clubs in world football in the coming years.

Unsurprisingly, Newcastle have been linked with a summer move for a host of other top stars, including Thomas Muller, although the Bayern Munich superstar is unlikely to leave the Bavarians anytime soon.

Nevertheless, the potential addition of someone like Dembele would be a statement of intent, eventually easing their job of luring other stars. Barcelona, on the other hand, could breathe a sigh of relief as they end ties with arguably the worst signing in the club’s history.
