Newcastle United have reportedly approached Bayern Munich regarding a potential move for Thomas Muller next season.

According to SportBild, Bayern Munich are set for difficult months ahead as they look to tie their established stars in Thomas Muller, Manuel Neuer and Robert Lewandowski to new long-term contracts. While the futures of Lewandowski and Neuer appear to be safe, there is a bit of uncertainty surrounding Muller’s situation.

The German international’s current deal at the club expires in 2023, with Newcastle United emerging as a potential suitor. The report suggests that the cash-rich Premier League outfit have contacted Bayern to explore the possibility of a summer move for the German.

Having racked up 18 assists in 21 league appearances, Muller has been one of the top performers in Europe’s top five leagues this term. His telepathic combination play with Robert Lewandowski has played a key role in helping Bayern Munich remain on top of the Bundesliga table and emerge as one of the favourites to win the UEFA Champions League.

Muller’s performances have not gone unnoticed, with Newcastle United prepared to make a move in the upcoming summer transfer window. It is no secret that the Magpies are ready to splash the cash if they stave off relegation, with the club already spending over €100 million in the recently concluded January transfer window.

While Newcastle mainly signed players that can help them retain their Premier League status, the Tyneside outfit are now expected to go after players that can potentially make them a top-four contender in the league next term. Muller fits the bill perfectly, given his wealth of experience at the highest level of football, coupled with his skill-set that makes him an excellent partner for any striker in Europe.

However, it is unlikely that Bayern Munich will fail in convincing Muller to sign a new contract in Bavaria. Having already lost Niklas Sule to arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund, the Rekordmeister will be keen on keeping hold of their remaining star players, starting with Muller, Lewandowski and Neuer.

The German playmaker himself is unlikely to leave Bavaria given his local roots. He is, in fact, the only homegrown star in the Bayern Munich squad right now and a massive part of the club’s heritage. With that in mind, Newcastle United may have to set their sights on other alternatives, one of whom might be Lyon star Karl Toko Ekambi.
