Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid are reportedly battling for the services of 19-year-old Uruguayan striker Matias Arezo.
According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Matias Arezo is the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid over a possible move in a future transfer window. The reigning La Liga champions are looking to usurp their local rivals in pursuit of the 19-year-old Uruguayan striker.
Matias Arezo has made quite a splash with his performances for River Plate Montevideo in the last couple of years. To date, the 19-year-old has made 89 appearances for the Uruguayan club, raking in 36 goals and 13 assists in the process.
Widely regarded as one of the most promising young attackers in Uruguay, Arezo has often been likened to Luis Suarez, with comparisons also being made with Darwin Nunez. And like Nunez, the 19-year-old could be set to take Europe by storm soon, with Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid among the clubs keen on signing him.
The interest from Real Madrid is understandable despite heavy links with Erling Haaland, who reportedly prefers joining Los Blancos. That is because Luka Jovic and Mariano Diaz are likely to leave the club at the earliest possible opportunity after failing to feature regularly at the Santiago Bernabeu.
In addition, signing Haaland is not set in stone either, meaning Real Madrid cannot just rest easy on suggestions that the Borussia Dortmund striker is keen on joining them. So, Arezo is a viable target for the Spanish giants, who are facing stiff competition from Atletico Madrid in his pursuit.
The reigning La Liga champions could enter the market for a striker, as Luis Suarez is in the final phase of his career while Matheus Cunha is yet to get fully settled in at the Wanda Metropolitano. In addition, it is not clear if Antoine Griezmann will join Atletico Madrid permanently, which is why signing someone like Arezo would be a step in the right direction.
Apart from the 19-year-old, Alexandre Lacazette, Julian Alvarez and Edinson Cavani are also on Atletico Madrid’s radar. However, it looks like Arezo is the priority for Los Colchoneros, who are looking to steal a march on Real Madrid for his signature.
According to El Nacional, Atletico Madrid will likely offer €10 million to secure the services of the Uruguayan striker, who could, in turn, be his compatriot Luis Suarez’s long-term successor. As for Real Madrid, it remains to be seen if the Merengues choose to retaliate with an attractive offer or if Arezo joins their local rivals instead.
