Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has reportedly emerged as a target for La Liga champions Atletico Madrid.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Edinson Cavani continues to be linked with a move away from Manchester United. The latest club to have emerged in pursuit of the Manchester United striker is Atletico Madrid, with the reigning La Liga champions plotting a Bosman move for him.

Edinson Cavani joined Manchester United on a free transfer as a surprise deadline day arrival in the summer transfer window of 2020. The move initially had its fair share of sceptics, but Cavani went a long way in proving his naysayers wrong, playing a key role in the Red Devils’ successful 2020/21 campaign.

However, 2021/22 has been a difficult season for the 34-year-old. While the return of Cristiano Ronaldo was bound to reduce the Uruguayan international’s game-time, he has also been beset by a few injuries, restricting him to only 274 minutes of action. All of it has created a lot of uncertainty surrounding Cavani’s future at Manchester United, with Atletico Madrid the latest club to show an interest in him.

Widespread reports have touted Atletico Madrid to be in the market for a striker, and for a good reason. While Diego Simeone has plenty of players capable of playing centre forward at his disposal, it is worth noting that Luis Suarez is in the twilight of his career, while Matheus Cunha is yet to set the stage alight since arriving at the Wanda Metropolitano in the summer.

In addition, it is unclear whether Antoine Griezmann will be signed permanently by Atletico Madrid next summer, leaving Joao Felix as the only remaining viable candidate in the first-team setup. So, it is hardly surprising that the defending La Liga champions have set their sights on Cavani, although the Manchester United forward will only be a short-term solution.

Apart from Cavani, Alexandre Lacazette is another key target for Atletico Madrid, with the Arsenal striker reportedly in talks to join Los Rojiblancos. As for Cavani, he will, like Lacazette, join Atletico Madrid as a free agent next summer, as things stand, with a renewal no closer to being signed.

In addition to Atletico Madrid, Cavani has been linked with other La Liga clubs like Sevilla, Real Madrid and Barcelona. So, it is clear that the veteran forward will be a popular figure in the transfer market if he chooses to call it quits at Manchester United next year.
