Liverpool are reportedly interested in Christian Pulisic, although convincing Chelsea to part ways with him would be difficult for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

According to Calciomercato, Liverpool are keen on signing Christian Pulisic in the January window, with Jurgen Klopp a long-term admirer of the American. However, negotiating a deal with Chelsea could prove difficult for the Merseyside club.

Pulisic was tipped to become one of the stars at the club after arriving from Borussia Dortmund in a £54 million deal when Frank Lampard was in charge. The USMNT international has shown his promise in bursts but has been unable to put together a consistent run of performances that can make him an undisputed starter.

Since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel, he has not featured regularly, and hence reports have emerged about the American considering his long-term future at the club. Injuries have also hampered the former Borussia Dortmund ace, but when fit and given a chance, he has shown his value on the field.

As demonstrated against Leicester City this weekend, Pulisic returned to the squad and scored during his cameo appearance. He also had another goal disallowed for offside, and performances like these will force Tuchel to consider him as a starting option in games from this point.

However, if Tuchel continues to use him sporadically, the American might be willing to consider his future at the club and angle for a move. He has a contract until 2024, which ensures Chelsea will not be forced into making a sale, although a sizeable offer, possibly one where they could make a profit over their £54 million outlay, might turn their heads.

Liverpool are reportedly interested in a possible move for the 23-year-old attacker. Jurgen Klopp has been an admirer of the American’s talents since his days as the Dortmund boss. Even though Pulisic never played under the German, he could be tempted to become a part of this Reds setup if conditions are favourable.

Liverpool have no shortage of wide attackers, with Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota capable of filling positions on either flank. However, Pulisic’s versatility to slot in any attacking position could be a factor attracting Klopp’s interest. The German boss has been looking for a wide attacker for a while now as indicated by the continued links with players like Adama Traore and Ismaila Sarr.

Liverpool also hold an interest in Jeremy Doku, who is attracting plenty of attention from the big European sides. Pulisic certainly heads those players on the list in terms of overall quality, although convincing Chelsea to sell one of their top stars would be challenging.

Liverpool and Chelsea are challengers on all fronts as both clubs battle for supremacy in the Champions League and Premier League. That alone could be enough for the Blues to block any enquiries from Merseyside for any player, let alone Pulisic.

In any case, it is highly doubtful they will do a deal in the middle of the season as Pulisic could become a key member of Tuchel’s plans from here on. Even if they are convinced over a sale, it is improbable Liverpool will agree to pay over the odds for a player bogged down by injury problems in recent years.

Let’s sign an injury prone player. Just for a change.
