Barcelona have been handed a major boost in pursuit of Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara, who is open to rejoining the Catalan club.

According to Portuguese journalist Pedro Almeida, Thiago Alcantara is weighing up the possibility of rejoining Barcelona. The Catalan giants are keen on bringing the Liverpool midfielder back to Camp Nou following the return of Dani Alves this week.

Thiago Alcantara started his club football career at Barcelona before joining Bayern Munich in 2013. After seven glittering years with the Bundesliga heavyweights, the Spanish international made his way to Liverpool in the summer of 2020.

However, the move to Liverpool has not worked out as envisioned for the 30-year-old, who has been hampered severely by a spate of injuries. To date, Thiago has made just 37 appearances for Liverpool, chipping in with a goal and an assist apiece along the way. The experienced midfielder is still rated highly, though, with former club Barcelona keen on re-signing him.

The interest from Barcelona is interesting but understandable. The Catalan giants do appear to be in need of signing a central midfielder after choosing not to replenish the space left vacant by the departures of Ilaix Moriba and Miralem Pjanic in the summer transfer window.

As a result, youngsters like Gavi and Nico Gonzalez have been fast-tracked into the first-team setup, with the duo being played week in week out. That does not bode well for either of them at their age, as Pedri has found out cruelly after playing nearly 70 games in the past year or so.

So, it is hardly surprising that Barcelona have set their sights on Thiago, although they have also been linked with several other midfielders. However, the eagerness to re-sign the Liverpool ace comes straight from Xavi, who has already overseen the popular return of Dani Alves.

As far as the pursuit of Thiago is concerned, the 30-year-old is considering the possibility of rejoining Barcelona. Such a development comes as a huge boost for the Blaugrana, who will now hope to re-sign the Liverpool midfielder on a fee that aligns with their financial means. What now remains to be seen is if Thiago indeed returns to Barcelona anytime soon or if he stays put at Liverpool.
