Barcelona are reportedly weighing up the possibility of re-signing Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara, with Xavi discussing a move with Joan Laporta.

According to Portuguese journalist Pedro Almeida, Thiago Alcantara has emerged as an option for Xavi to bolster his squad’s midfield unit. The new Barcelona manager has already begun discussions with president Joan Laporta over the possibility of re-signing the Liverpool midfielder.

Thiago Alcantara is one of the most successful players of his generation, having won trophies wherever he has played. The 30-year-old is currently in his second season with Liverpool, joining the Premier League heavyweights from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2020 on a cut-price fee.

However, the former Barcelona midfielder’s stint with the Reds has not been memorable so far, with injuries curtailing his involvement greatly. To date, Thiago has made just 37 appearances for Liverpool, chipping in with a goal and an assist apiece in the process.

Despite his struggles at Anfield, the Spanish international remains a highly regarded player for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. However, former club Barcelona are now showing an interest in him, with Xavi keen on a reunion with Thiago.

Barcelona have been reported to be eyeing a move for another former player in Dani Alves, with talks reportedly set to get underway. And now, Thiago has emerged as a candidate to reinforce the midfield unit, with Xavi beginning discussions with president Joan Laporta over the possibility of re-signing the 30-year-old.

The Catalan giants have been reported to be in the market for a midfielder anyway, with Saul Niguez, Marcelo Brozovic and Denis Zakaria among the midfielder linked with them. However, Thiago is also a viable target for Barcelona, considering he has prior experience in La Liga.

In addition, he would be an ideal fit in the system that Xavi is touted to put in place at Camp Nou. Having said that, it is unclear if Liverpool would even entertain the idea of parting with the Spanish international, whose own stance of returning to Barcelona remains unclear.

For now, Thiago is the latest player to be linked with Barcelona following the appointment of Xavi as the new manager. It remains to be seen if his Liverpool stint ends in less than two years with a popular return to Camp Nou.
