Barcelona are reportedly set to hold a meeting with Brazilian defender Dani Alves to discuss a potential transfer in January.

According to a report by Brazilian outlet UOL Esporte, Barcelona are set to hold talks with Dani Alves, with Xavi likely behind the idea of re-signing the Brazilian defender. The 38-year-old has recently publicly asserted that he would be happy to return to Camp Nou.

Dani Alves is the most successful player to have ever played football, having won a whopping 43 trophies in his career so far. An illustrious performer for club and country for the better part of the last two decades, the veteran defender is also widely regarded as one of the, if not the best, right-back ever.

The Brazilian international’s best spell at club level came at Barcelona, for whom he turned out 391 times while chipping in with 21 goals and 101 assists in the process. Since leaving the Catalan club in 2016, the 38-year-old has represented Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Sao Paulo. He is currently a free agent after terminating his contract with Sao Paulo in September.

As far as Barcelona are concerned, they have had a massive void in the right-back slot ever since Alves called it quits at Camp Nou. Only recently, Sergino Dest has gone some way in filling the veteran’s shoes, but the USMNT international still has to scale a lot of heights before he can be deemed a worthy successor.

However, Barcelona have now been handed an opportunity to re-sign Alves, with the first reports to that end emerging last month. And UOL Esporte have claimed that Barcelona are set to begin discussions with Alves over a potential move in the January transfer window.

The interest in Alves likely stems from Xavi, as initial reports had suggested that Barcelona did not intend to re-sign their former defender. However, it now looks like Barcelona are weighing up the possibility of bringing the Brazilian international back to Camp Nou.

Alves has already made his feelings about rejoining Barcelona known, insisting that all Barcelona need to do is call, and he will return to Camp Nou. And with a meeting between the two parties set to be held soon, it remains to be seen if the Blaugrana end up re-signing the 38-year-old.
