Arsenal and Liverpool are reportedly among the clubs keen on signing Marco Asensio from Real Madrid in the January transfer window.

According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Arsenal and Liverpool are embroiled in a five-way battle to secure the services of Marco Asensio. The Spanish forward could seek a way out of Real Madrid in the January transfer window.

Marco Asensio has struggled to hit the heights his immense potential has promised for years since returning from a long injury layoff last year. After failing to perform consistently last season, the 25-year-old has continued to blow hot and cold early in 2021/22.

So far this season, the Spaniard has managed a tally of three goals and an assist in 11 appearances across all competitions. The numbers are not too impressive, especially considering each of the goals he has scored came in one game, so it is not surprising that he has not been a regular starter for Real Madrid lately.

With Asensio not doing himself any favours, his stature has reduced significantly. The Spaniard has had to share game-time with Rodrygo Goes and Eden Hazard, with Vinicius Junior nailing down the other wide attacking spot in the Real Madrid attack. And things seem to have reached a head for the 25-year-old, who could seek a January exit, with Arsenal and Liverpool among his suitors.

Arsenal were reportedly hot on the Spanish forward’s trail in the summer transfer window as well before a move failed to materialise. The interest has not waned since, and it is clear why the north Londoners remain keen on signing the Real Madrid star, with Nicolas Pepe struggling to perform consistently.

On the other hand, at Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp needs more able backups to his first-choice options in the final third. On top of that, with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane set to join their respective nations for the Africa Cup of Nations in January, an attacking reinforcement becomes the need of the hour, thereby explaining the interest in Asensio.

Apart from Arsenal and Liverpool, AC Milan, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund are also vying for his signature. And with Asensio considering his departure from Real Madrid in January, any of the five clubs could be in contention to sign him, although Dortmund could be the favourites to secure his services, according to the report.
