Borussia Dortmund are reportedly interested in making a swoop for Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio who has found game-time hard to come by.

According to a report from Catalan publication El Nacional, Real Madrid attacker Marco Asensio has emerged as a potential person of interest for German Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund.

Asensio signed for Real Madrid in the summer of 2015 from RCD Mallorca and after spending a year on loan at Espanyol, he was integrated into the first-team setup at the Spanish capital outfit. However, after a serious knee injury, the 25-year-old missed almost the entire 2019/20 season.

Having made his comeback last term, Asensio failed to hit the heights of the past and struggled for consistency. As a result, game-time has become hard to come by for the Spaniard this term under new manager Carlo Ancelotti. While he did score a hat-trick against former club Mallorca, there has not been much of note from him.

An exit in January or even at the end of the season has, thus, emerged as a strong possibility, with several clubs across Europe keeping tabs on his situation. Now, Borussia Dortmund too have emerged as a possible option for the Spanish international who failed to make the cut for the UEFA Euro 2020 squad during the summer.

Dortmund, as per the report, have held a long-standing interest in Asensio. Considering that they did not sign a direct replacement for Jadon Sancho during the summer transfer window following his departure to Manchester United, they could do with another attacking presence in the squad, making someone like Asensio a viable target.

Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund share a healthy relationship, which could help work out a deal for the Spaniard. While it has been claimed that the Merengues would want €40 million for Asensio, there could also be the possibility of the La Liga heavyweights using him as a makeweight in a deal to sign one of their key transfer targets for next summer.

Indeed, at this point, it is no secret that Real Madrid are intent on landing Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund next year. And adding Asensio into the mix would allow them to lower the Norwegian international’s price tag, saving the club money to go after other reported targets.

In fact, the report adds that Haaland’s agent, Mino Raiola, would be very much open to pushing that kind of a deal in order to land Haaland in Madrid in 2022. It now remains to be seen if the 25-year-old ends up making the switch to Signal Iduna Park next year.
