Marc-Andre ter Stegen has reportedly emerged as a surprise target for Manchester City, who wish to swoop him away from Barcelona.

According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Manchester City are closely monitoring the situation Marc-Andre ter Stegen at Barcelona. The Premier League champions intend to make a move for the German goalkeeper if he is put up for sale by the Blaugrana.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen has blossomed into an indomitably world class goalkeeper since joining Barcelona from Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer of 2014. Initially utilised exclusively in Copa del Rey and the UEFA Champions League, the 29-year-old became the first-choice goalkeeper following the departure of Claudio Bravo.

To date, ter Stegen has turned out 285 times for Barcelona, conceding 282 times while keeping 116 clean sheets in the process. However, as per recent reports, there are doubts emerging over the future of ter Stegen at Camp Nou. Such a development has now piqued the interest of Manchester City.

The interest from Manchester City comes as quite a surprise, considering Ederson Moraes is going strong at the Etihad. In fact, the Brazilian goalkeeper has only gone from strength to strength since joining the Citizens on a record fee from Benfica in the summer of 2017.

In addition, Zack Steffen is touted for a bright future at Manchester City and does not seem like he is going anywhere. So, it is hard to see where ter Stegen would fit in the scheme of things, even if he is deemed to be surplus to requirements at Barcelona.

Instead, a move to Bayern Munich, who have recently shown an interest in the 29-year-old, would make more sense for both the player and his suitor, seeing as Manuel Neuer is approaching the end of his career. Nevertheless, as per the report, Manchester City will make their move if ter Stegen is put up for sale by Barcelona.

The Blaugrana, on their part, also seem to be keeping their options open, having been linked with Luis Maximiano, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Kepa Arrizabalaga, among others lately. As for ter Stegen, it remains to be seen if his time at Barcelona comes to an end anytime soon and if Manchester City are the club to snap him up in such a scenario.
