Manchester City are reportedly interested in signing Joshua Kimmich from Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich next summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Manchester City have set their sights on signing Joshua Kimmich in next summer’s transfer window. Pep Guardiola is eager to reunite with the 26-year-old Bayern Munich midfield powerhouse at the Etihad ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Joshua Kimmich joined Bayern Munich from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2015 and has since gone on to blossom into arguably the best holding midfielder on the planet. A mainstay in midfield for the Bundesliga champions, the German international is also capable of playing as a right-back, having initially started out as one when he was groomed by Pep Guardiola.

In fact, it was Guardiola who was one of the key factors in the 26-year-old’s transformation into a midfield powerhouse. To date, Kimmich has made 272 appearances for Bayern, chipping in with a brilliant tally of 33 goals and 75 appearances in the process. And it goes without saying that just about every club in the world can do with a player of his talents, with Manchester United currently tailing him.

The interest from Manchester City is hardly surprising considering Fernandinho is in the twilight of his career. While the veteran Brazilian midfielder has been quite an asset for the Citizens, it will be prudent of them to bring in a successor at the earliest, with a summer departure likely, as things stand.

While Rodri is also a part of the first-team setup at the Etihad, Pep Guardiola is keen on bringing in Kimmich, who will be an upgrade on the Spanish international as well. With that being said, the 26-year-old is a viable target for Manchester City, who have also been linked with Sergio Busquets in recent times.

That Kimmich will arrive at the peak of his powers if signed further makes him an appealing target for Manchester City. However, Bayern Munich are likely to be reluctant to part with their prized asset, who is one of the, if not the most important player for the Bundesliga champions.

What now remains to be seen is if Manchester City further firm up their interest in Kimmich and launch a move for him in next summer’s transfer window. If so, it will then be interesting to see if a move sees the light of the day somehow.
