Newcastle United have reportedly identified Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as a potential transfer target for the January window.

Following the massive takeover, Newcastle United have the richest owners in football and naturally, the rumour mill is abuzz with speculations regarding their plans for the upcoming transfer window. Among a host of players that have been linked with a move to the St. James’ Park, the latest addition is Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, as per reports from Fichajes.

Aubameyang has been with Arsenal for over three years now, having arrived from German giants Borussia Dortmund in January 2018. During his time at the Emirates, the 32-year-old has established himself as Arsenal’s most important player and one of the most lethal marksmen in the Premier League.

While Aubameyang endured a difficult season last time out, he has shown signs of form in the new campaign, already bagging five goals and an assist from seven games across all competitions. With Mikel Arteta overseeing a youth revolution at Arsenal, some of the senior members of the squad may be deemed expendable, such as Alexandre Lacazette, who has been linked with Newcastle United.

Now, the Magpies have also identified Aubameyang as a potential transfer target ahead of the upcoming January window. Currently languishing towards the bottom end of the table, Newcastle have struggled for goals, having managed just eight goals from their seven league outings so far.

The problems become even more glaring when either Callum Wilson or Allan Saint-Maximin are unavailable. With Joelinton not contributing meaningfully, it becomes imperative that Newcastle address this issue at the earliest possible.

To that end, they have been linked with a host of forwards in recent weeks. including Manchester United’s Anthony Martial as well as misfiring Chelsea striker Timo Werner. Now, Aubameyang has also emerged as a potential option for the Toons, although convincing him to make the switch could be a whole different thing altogether.

The Gabonese striker’s contract with Arsenal runs out in 2023, meaning he will be entering the final year of his deal in the summer. That could lead Arsenal to consider the possibility of cashing should the Magpies come up with a significant offer for their captain.

It remains to be seen if Newcastle do make an approach for Aubameyang or decide to look elsewhere. But big movements can be expected at St. James’ Park when the mid-season trading period opens for business.
