Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs in contention to sign Mauro Icardi, who is expected to leave Paris Saint-Germain next summer.

According to Calciomercato, Mauro Icardi could be set for a Paris Saint-Germain come the end of the season. His current contract in the French capital expires in 2024, but the forward might be disposed of earlier than planned as the club looks to balance its books after acquiring the services of Lionel Messi this summer.

Icardi’s situation at PSG has reportedly alerted Tottenham Hotspur. The Premier League giants are in the hunt for new attackers as they look to prepare for life without Harry Kane next season. The Englishman, despite his poor start to the campaign, is highly rated by Manchester City, who may enter the market for him next summer.

As such, Tottenham have identified Icardi as a potential replacement for the English international. The Argentine has had a mixed spell at PSG since joining the club in 2019, initially on a season-long loan deal before the move was made permanent last year.

During his ongoing two and a half year spell at the club, Icardi has netted 36 goals in 72 competitive appearances. But only 30 of those have come in Ligue 1, with the forward’s record of just 7 goals playing a vital role behind PSG missing out on the league title to LOSC Lille last season.

The arrival of Messi has now further diminished his role in the PSG first-team. But it appears Tottenham are now prepared to offer him a lifeline by giving him the chance to become their first-choice forward next season after the expected sale of Kane.

Formerly of Inter Milan, Icardi certainly boasts a stellar goalscoring record in Europe, having 124 goals in 219 competitive appearances for Nerazzurri prior to his arrival in Paris.

Whether or not the 28-year-old is quality enough for the Premier League remains to be seen, but the striker’s aggressive mentality combined with his goalscoring instincts are certainly undisputed. Tottenham, though, have no shortage of alternatives, having also been linked with a proven English footballer like Ivan Toney of Brentford.

As for PSG, Icardi might not be their only notable departure next summer, as Les Parisiens are also bracing themselves for the future without Kylian Mbappe. The Frenchman is widely expected to pen a pre-contract agreement with Real Madrid, even though Los Blancos are set to face fresh competition from Manchester City.
