Edinson Cavani is reportedly prepared to leave Manchester United in the January transfer window in favour of joining Real Madrid.

According to a report by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Real Madrid have been handed a major boost in pursuit of Edinson Cavani. The veteran striker is open to the prospect of leaving Manchester United in favour of joining the Spanish giants in the January transfer window.

Edinson Cavani joined Manchester United on a free transfer in the summer of 2020, arriving at Old Trafford amid a lot of skepticism surrounding him. The Uruguayan international, though, has gone a long way in dissipating a lot of the doubts, having made some important contributions for the Red Devils last season.

However, at the onset of the 2021/22 season, there is a feeling that he will become a rotation option for Manchester United following the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo. So far this season, Cavani has started just one game while making three further appearances off the bench, although an injury layoff also played its part in that. Nevertheless, his situation has alerted Real Madrid.

Real Madrid already have one of the best strikers in the world in Karim Benzema, but it is worth noting that the Frenchman does not have quality backups, especially with Luka Jovic and Mariano Diaz failing to make any sort of impression at all. Hence, it is important that in the short term, the Merengues have a striker in place to complement the Frenchman.

So while Erling Haaland is the potential long-term solution for Real Madrid, if signed, it would be a prudent move to secure the services of an experienced striker in the meantime. With that in mind, Los Blancos do seem to have a plan in mind for the January transfer window.

As per recent reports, the Spanish giants are plotting a winter move for Cavani in order to push for the titles with a better chance in the second half of the season. And now, Real Madrid have been handed a boost in pursuit of the Manchester United striker, who, as per Mundo Deportivo, is open to the prospect of departing Old Trafford in favour of a switch to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Manchester United’s stance over a potential January exit for Cavani is unknown right now, although one can expect them to try and hold on to the 34-year-old this coming winter. With that in mind, it will be interesting to see if Real Madrid can swoop the Uruguayan striker away from Manchester United in January or if he stays put at Old Trafford.
