Real Madrid have reportedly set their sights on 20-year-old Uruguayan prodigy Agustin Alvarez Martinez, labelled the “next Cavani”.

According to a report by Spanish publication AS, Real Madrid’s search for the next big talent in South America has taken them to Uruguay. It is here that they have discovered Agustin Alvarez Martinez, who has been labelled as the “next Cavani” and has been scintillating for Penarol.

Agustin Alvarez Martinez has been with one of the most well known Uruguayan clubs since his youth days, having joined the Penarol academy in 2012. And up until he made his first-team debut for the Decano Manyas Aurinegros Carboneros Mirasoles, the 20-year-old was simply brilliant, scoring 113 goals in 170 age division games.

The young striker, labelled the “next Cavani” has continued to go from strength to strength for the first-team, with a fabulous record of 17 goals and three assists in 26 appearances this season. And after scoring on debut for Uruguay this month, his star has only grown further, with Martinez now popping up on the radar of Real Madrid.

The interest from Real Madrid makes a lot of sense, considering they are always on the lookout for promising young players, especially in South America. Add to it the fact that Karim Benzema is approaching the final phase of his career, and it becomes clear why Los Blancos are tracking someone like Martinez.

While Real Madrid’s primary target is and still remains Erling Haaland, it is important to note that the Norwegian prodigy will likely ignite a transfer battle next summer, when his release clause will come into effect. As a result, it is prudent for the Merengues to be on the lookout for alternatives as well.

To that end, the Spanish giants have set their sights on Karim Adeyemi recently, with Martinez now emerging as a potential target as well. Having said that, it will be interesting to see if the 20-year-old is signed even if Real Madrid manage to land Haaland.

For now, Martinez is the latest South American prodigy to have popped up on Real Madrid’s radar, with the La Liga heavyweights closely monitoring his progress. If he continues to make a big impact for Penarol and Uruguay, it will hardly be surprising to see Real Madrid make their move for him or other clubs join in the chase in due course.
